IE 9 Warning: Do NOT Upgrade your Browser Yet!

IE 9 UPDATE PROBLEM Warning on Saturday, April 9, 2011

I’m posting this in Firefox because the new update to IE 9 is so screwed up I can’t post in WordPress with IE!

Hey, it’s Mike Liebner here from Blogging Underground and I have an important news flash for you about the newest lame version update for Internet Explorer that is causing all kinds of odd sporadic problems and one big one with WordPress blogs.

Sorry for the scary warning headline – but you have got to be aware of this if you use Internet Explorer (IE) as your browser! If you automatically install Windows updates it may be too late! It’s possible this may be fixed by the time you read this – so be aware that the current version MIGHT or MIGHT NOT work properly or there may be a fix or workaround.

Yesterday morning, on my first day back after a short vacation, I turned on my desktop PC after being away for a few days and it had a message flash saying there was an important update for Windows 7. I usually pay more attention and look to see what exactly they’re saying needs updating, but this time I just clicked INSTALL UPDATES and went to make my morning coffee and juice.

Usually I can trust that Windows 7 updates are going to work just fine, so I haven’t postponed updating for the most part when they have something new for my desktop pc – but this time I am getting burned and I know that you guys are going to get burned too, so that’s why I am warning you NOT to do the IE Update to Version 9 yet until they get it right (they better!).

So what exactly happened? OK – let me explain.

Apparently Windows upgraded my Internet Explorer to a new version 9.0.8112.16421

I guess I had version 8. I never really paid attention. I equally use IE and Firefox all the time and rarely have issues that I can say are browser related. But since installing IE 9 yesterday all kinds of sporadic weird quirky things started happening.

Most notable was when I posted in a few of my personal WordPress blogs the POST CONTENT area would get STUCK and I couldn’t edit or delete or even add anything. I lost a few posts before I realized that it must be IE causing the problems. I switched to Firefox and it worked fine in wordpress.

Sure enough, when I went to the Blogging Underground Blog Post Utility (BPU!) the same thing happened using the new version of Internet Explorer. I entered a post and the CONTENT area froze and even after saving a draft the content disappeared. Bummer! Once again – it works fine with Firefox.

Trust me on this – I work very hard to keep the BPU as solid as can be, so we don’t ever have a hard time posting in the BU Blog Network. Well – this new update for IE 9 plain and simple doesn’t work with WordPress blogs and as far as I can tell does not work with the BPU (which works almost exactly like Worpdress blogs do except on steroids).

I went to my notebook computer and posted successfully using IE 8 with both Worpdress and the BPU so it’s very clear the problem is with the new version of Internet Explorer.

So if you are on windows and Windows asks you to do an UPDATE – please consider NOT doing the one for Internet Explorer Version 9. I personally am rolling my system back and going back using System Restore because other than the quirky problems I don’t see any advantages to the new version of IE 9 other than cosmetic.

Now, I’ll go ahead and post this info on my blog – so you can help contribute new information if you have it. I may have missed something or you may find out something you’d like to ad. Please feel free to comment!

There is also a thread at WordPress about this problem – but at the time of this writing the ONLY suggestion is to use compatibility mode – I am not sure if that is a valid suggestion. Here is the link to the WordPress Forum

Best wishes for your online success!

  1. If you go to Windows Update in your control panel, you can uninstall IE9 without doing a system restore. IE will revert automatically to the most recent previous version. This is “cleaner” than using system restore.

  2. I agree Micheal, just uninstall IE9 your old browser should be there and reinstall fine,I just keep getting those dumb messages to install IE9…you’ll think they would get this right by now.

  3. You would think as popular as wordpress is, MS would catch a problem before releasing an update.
I did exactly what you did, Mike. Windows 7 prompted me to update IE and did so. But I didn’t even know about the problem because I dislike IE so much I never use it anymore. I bounce between firefox and chrome depending on what I’m doing.

  4. Hi Mike,

AU and BU also have problems with Chrome

    Comment by Ange — April 9, 2011 @ 3:40 pm

  5. Yes CHROME has problems with a lot of things – you’d think they’d fix it! Chrome adds extra characters among other things.

I also agree that WordPress is significant enough in numbers that you’d think they’d have run into this. Don’t any of the Microsoft programmers blog???

I’ll try rolling back in Windows update and wait till Ihear IE 9 has been fixed.

I will say though – I have been hit with viruses a few times and I am amazed at how well windows 7 SYSTEM RESTORE works! In older versions of Windows it was a risky way to save your butt that didn’t always work – but now they got that right.

I’d prefer if they fixed IE 9 to work with wordpress – I mean eventually a lot of people will be using the newest version of IE – so I need to be seeing it the way that our users are seeing it!

  6. Thanks for the warning. Think I am ok. I run Vista and use auto updates. Just checked and still am running IE ver 8.

  7. Thanks for the heads up Mike, will make sure that we skip that one. Just goes to show another reason why I should avoid IE where I can.

  8. Looks like it might be a TinyMCE problem that has been fixed.

WordPress uses TinyMCE for the editor.

See this current thread for details:

  9. Ummmm…. I just looked at the thread on TinyMCE and don’t get it…. they say they’re fixing it. Does that mean only the newest CURRENT versions of WordPress will work with IE9??? Not all of our blogs are updated to lthe latest WP at every update :’>

  12. Hi Mike
So I.E. have done it again!
The same thing happened to me on my old PC when they automatically updated to version 8 – and my PC has never worked properly ever since. Couldn’t use system restore because I previously ran Windows 98 and paid for upgrade to XP but have no disk. Re-loaded to previous version, but as I said, doesn’t work properly. Changed to Firefox – so much easier!
I spent hours on the forum, tried what they suggested, but with no result.
    Hooray for Firefox!!!
    P.S. Bought a new laptop!!

  14. I thought I was losing my mind. I googled it and got no answers. On my wordpress siteFast Fan Pages-Preview I kept losing the headline on pages every time I went into IE 9. It worked fine in Firefox but not IE 9. Thank you for easing my mind. Love your work.

  15. Has anyone heard anything new on IE 9 working with WordPress? I’m afraid to upgrade it – even though it has been a while.

  19. There are often many implicit bugs and security problems when a software is newly released. IE9 do not support XP, while around me many people are still using XP.

  20. I sure wish I knew this BEFORE I “upgraded” I, for one, am pretty sick and tired of all these uber failing “upgrades”! For goodness sake, if it ain’t broke, PULEASE don’t fix it! I feel like an idjet for falling for this “upgrade” promise once again. I cannot even use IE any more since the “upgrade”, altough with all the crashes it had, I was weaning out from it anyway. Kudos to Firefox for a high quality product.

  22. Thanks for giving us a heads up on this. Now most of the time, updates are good. But sometimes it does happen that updates for a particular program may do more harm than good. It’s advised to read about reviews about the version update first before going ahead and installing them.
