Internet Marketing and Better Backlinks - Different? Better? Find out why.

News and information for online web publishing professionals!

What kind of links work best right now?

If you want your web sites to be successful and get search engine traffic for free then you need to do some of your own work and get some good links pointing to your best pages!

To get the best results with your websites and get lots of free traffic for your target keywords, you need to be involved and do some work building the reputation for your website and pages.

It’s like anything in life – you can’t just sit back and wait – you need to be involved in your own success.

So what kind of links work best right now?

Keyword text links still rule! Especially within good relevant content like a related article!

And get this – it works INTERNALLY on your own site, but even better if your links are in articles on sites hosted on servers that are far away!

Ideally the articles are on sites that the search engines already love. For example, getting text links for your keywords in relevant articles in blogs that are already indexed by the search engines and are updated regularly really works like magic! These kind of in-content relevant links should be a part of every sites linking strategy to get on top.

Link Mix – Diversity Rules

It is very important to have a good mix of links. Link diversity. Not just the same kind of links from just one type of site or forum or comments etc. You need a good variety of places that link to you.

For example – one of the reasons that LINK BLASTING like a robot can harm you is that there is a FOOTPRINT that is revealed when you blast comments in a forum, or article directories using the same script, or any of a number of specific types of sites that spammers have figured out are easy to get links in.

The reason spammers love them is the footprints make it easy to find the sites to get the links in. This works against you as the search engines know this.

The footprints show there is a similarity and the links get discounted or even worse your site gets penalized or even banned for spamming links.

Avoid blasting with automation if you can. More times than not blasting will get a site in trouble.

Social Signals

You also need some good social links too – like tweets on Twitter with your URL (even if shortened or nofollow). You can also benefit from Facebook and Pinterest links!

The idea is for your social profile to help dillute any possible patterns or similarities that may be found in your overall profile.

Here is what I do.

Me, every time I add a new artice to a site, I usually publish it as a page (URL #1) and also create a post (URL #2) to announce it with a relevant mini article and link to URL#1 internally (on the same domain).

I will then tweet about both URL’s from my main Twitter account for that site (more than 1 helps) – I will also like it on Facebook and/or post about it there – AND if the URL’s have an image I’ll pin it on Pinterest.

I’ll then add the RSS feed to a few RSS Directories including RSS6.

RSS Feed directories are also good to backlink your backlinks – simply submit feeds from any BLOGS you have posted articles in that link to your pimped pages.

In-Content Links

The most important links you need for your URL to rank high are from articles on different domains with lots of relevant related words.

To make sure my main article page gets RELEVANCE SIGNALS for my target keywords I’ll make sure there are links from at least 4 or 5 good quality related articles on domains that are not hosted on the same server.

Me, I use the Blogging Underground network of blogs. If you don’t have access to them, you can always use free hosted blogs or submit to article directories, but the links are not as good and you have less control and the process takes more time.

Posting articles in the Blogging Underground blog network is fast and easy and the articles get published instantly.

You can use other sites for posting articles with links if you have access to them, but the Blogging Underground Blogs work like magic and are fun and easy to use.

The idea is to make sure Google has RELEVANT KEYWORD LINKS coming from PAGES that have LOTS of RELATED WORDS to what you are linking to.

Usually this link strategy is enough to get an article page to rank on page one for my target keywords. Often I’ll go sraight to the top (depending on the reputation and age of my site I am linking)

That’s usually a good start for the social signals to hit and the reputation building articles to help establish relevance and push up the rankings.

Fresh links!

I will usually come back a week or two later and make sure a few more extra fresh links are coming in to show the page is fresh and happening.

You also need to do this if you find your ranking is slipping. Usually a few keyword text links in a few more articles will push you back up.

Important: make sure you have some variety in your keyword text. Don’t link them all perfectly. Make sure some of the links pointing to the page have extra words – or a partial phrase or even have click here.

That’s one of the things that has changed. You can’t have TOO PERFECT of a link mix or it will actually work against you.

That goes for the text in your links and the KIND of links you are getting and diversity of servers the domains are hosted on. You need to have lots of different IP’s pointing at you – otherwise we’d all just build a network of blogs on one server and it would work. It doesn’t.

That’s why the Blogging Undegrround blogs are hosted on so many different servers and IP addresses. Plus with members contributing blogs we have a huge diverse pool of IP’s that the articles can be published on.

Diversity is important.

It’s never good to do things just one way. Mix it up! Variety is the new norm!

Just make sure you have at least SOME links from articles with related content pointing at your best pages. This is essential to build the reputation for your pages and help push them up.

IS there risk in going out and getting your own links?

Yes, there is some risk – there is with anything you do to get ahead of your competition.

If you play it too safe you have ZERO chance of getting on top – especially for competitive keywords.

If you are not willing to risk failure then you will have very little chance to succeed!

So either you do nothing and have little risk or you do something and have a chance to win big.

Doing nothing is accepting what you get by sheer luck and is most likely going to bring very little or even nothing. Your competitors will NOT be doing nothing – will they?

You need to do MORE than your competitors or THEY will be on top of you.

The strategy we use at Blogging Underground for linking still works because the fact is the kind of links you can get from articles in our blogs are the most effective and work well to get you on top of the search results pages.

Do you want to let everything happen naturally like they want us to do?

If you do nothing to ensure your own success, you have little to no chance of succeeding.

If everyone keeps following the bad advice of doing nothing, the biggest companies and sites will start taking over more and more niches.

They won’t stop promoting their sites. They’ll do what many are afraid to do. They’ll work hard to get top rankings – and so should you because the rewards are too great to let them fall to simple chance and luck.

You create your own luck!

If you want top rankings – you need good links!

The only people who have a chance are the ones who DO STUFF to move up. Link building gets results.

I am not saying to do comment SPAM or blast links or do anything evil or unethical – we have never suggested you spam – but I am saying you need good links and the only way to get a super healthy link profile is by getting at least some of your own links yourself.

There is some risk when you do anything to get an advantage – but if you simply post good quality articles in good blogs like in the Blogging Underground network and have keyword relevant links pointing to your web pages (which are relevant) there is nothing evil or unethical about that and it will help your rankings on search!

Just be sure to keep things mixed up and diverse. Don’t be a robot or act like one.

This works well on all the sites I have started the past year or so and I regularly get new sites on top by following the strategy we teach at BU.

Now – get out there and start building your sites and do the things that will bring you success! It’s there within reach if you want it!

> Blogging Underground members get the right kind of links any time they need them! You should too!

  1. Have to admit I really do find link building to be a drag, but I still do much of what you have described here. Social sites especially. I think it probably is time to get my nose to the grindstone again and start diversifying the types of links I have.

  3. Thanks for keeping the great info coming, Mike.
I’ve been working on links within content for a couple years now, but didn’t pay attention to diversity. I’m catching up now by using majesticseo and market samurai to check on historical anchor text and then adjust new links from there.
