Wordpress Theme Tweaks
Wordpress Theme Tweaks for Internet Marketing
As I learn more about using wordpress blogs I have been spending more time on tweaks to the themes. As far as SEO and Internet Marketing are concerned, most blog themes need some adjustments to make them search engine friendly. It’s not always fun but I must say I now have some bitchin’ modified themes to use whenever I set up a new Wordpress blog for Internet Marketing purposes.
Usually I just upload the blog, try a few of the many availble themes and then I start tweaking away! Usually I figure things out by trial and error but I am sure there has to be a better way… but in the end it works and I have some nice blogs to show for it!
I just modified a free theme Wuhan and put my own little touches on it. It’s at Topica Articles if ya wanna see it in action.
If you are really fond of it and wanna use it on one of your sites, simply drop me a line and ask for the Topica Wordpress theme & I’ll send the theme to ya in a zip. Since I didn’t code it from the ground up I am not sure about whether I can freely distribute it, but hey, if my friends ask for it – what am I supposted to do??
I nabbed a great little feature and dropped it on the sidebar and that’s the “latest posts” command which I rarely see included in a theme, yet it is such an obvious choice, especially if you want a little SEO power in your blogs as it will show the latest 10 posts on each page of your site, instead of how the stock themes just show them on the front page. That means each category page (usally higher PageRank) and each individual pots page will now send a little love to the newest posts on your blog! Pretty cool, eeh?
Of course I also dumped the Blogroll thang and replaced it with my own “on the net” links which you can add by tweaking the sidebar.php file. Simply replace one of my links (or keep them there and add you own).
Also, the header graphic can be easily customized. Just open up in any graphic editor and change the title to the name of your site. It’s also pretty easy to just wipe out my trees and blue sky and add your own image or design. This can really make your page look unique!
Also in the sidebar is a php include pointing to Mutated’s RSS feed and will randomly show one of the 20 latest article excerpts. This is a great way to add great words to your blog pages and of course you are free to leave it on the sidebar as I am always happy to get links from my friends :’>
The words are power words and can even bring you some extra traffic!
Well, hope you like theme and as I said, drop me a line if you’d like it to use on your web sites! The tweaks are on me!

It sounds like you’re a “super tweaker”, Mike.
OK, I guess it’s just me who hates tweaking things like WP themes, CSS templates and MediaWiki’s code.
I find that I spend hours on it to get it looking how I want and then, with the next “security patch” it all gets broken.
Neil.

I have never tweaked successfully on my themes. I tend to go into the code and destroy something! I don’t know what I do!
My best blog which has over 200 RSS subscribers is the Wasters Blog. The home page is OK, but if you go to look at any of the single post pages there does not seem to be any formatting at all!
Is that curable, short of a complete reinstall?! Would it work for me to change the theme, or would I loose still more?
Comment by stevelast — January 17, 2008 @ 6:34 pm
Hey Mike,
Let me start by saying, “GREAT NAME!”
Seriously though, I know people don’t give
enough thought into the SEO value of their
blogs.
I think it’s because blogs are so good at
getting traffic quickly that many people
don’t even take the time to tweak them
to get even more traffic.
For example, one of my clients just setup
a blog and posted 1 article. Within 24
hours she had 85 unique visitors.
And she has done nothing for traffic! But,
by doing tweaks you can get even more traffic
for the same work.
I LOVE your idea about the latest posts and
making it show on every page. I’ll have to
look into that.
All around, though…great post!

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the great tips about “tweaking” a WordPress. I’ve got a Wordpress blog, so I’ll try and put these suggestions in place.
BTW, Why do you say “Of course” about replacing Blogroll with your own “on the net? links??? What is the advantage in what you are doing?
Thanks!

Hi, How easy is it to change a base colour within a theme?
I have found a theme I really like but the base colour overall is a pinkish brown. Would love to change it to something different but am living with it currently as I like the design.
Not having played too much with internal codes
I presume it will be in Hex form in one of the files
would it be the style.css?
Sorry to ask but you do appear to be quite versed in the
Wordpress theme

thanks for this great post. I is a fan of article marketing and have been using article marketing tactics for the past few years. But as my website grow, I have found that writing articles is very tidous and smetime I encounter writer block as well. for those who have problem writing articles, you can try http://ccarticles.com . I purchased around 300 to 500 articles from their company and the articles is top quality. Then i submit them using the Article Submitter Auto and generate quite a decent of money from it as well

Okay lets keep the compliments going. You sir, did a great job posting this bit of detail. The importance of blogs in the SEO and link building world is huge and the trick you gave with the RSS feed was brilliant. When it comes to local online business marketing for example Online Dental or Online Dealership Marketing.
Link building is incredibly important. Word Press is a great tool to get people talking and reviewing companies. Your website even if it is a company can benefit incredibly from having a blog and RSS feed. If you ever need help, let us know.

I love playing around with the wordpress themes as well to see how they can be tweaked to make them more SEO friendly. Most of the time, I will heavily SEO the front page and then use a plugin to SEO the individual blog posts.
Hopefully Wordpress will continue to develop with SEO in mind and if not, we can count on sharing information that will help us to rank better in the search engines with what is available to us.

Hostestly I have never had to tweak a single wordpress theme I have used to get good SEO results, but I also usually pay a nice price to have it SEO ready from the start. I suppose if free themes is your thing, then go for it.
Truthfully I found more of a need to fix wordpress itself. By default things like your your “most recent comments”, your calendar links, and your page header link have no title attributes in the links (this is not something a theme can fix). Wordpresses inability to corrently format text is also a SEO problem. Wrapping things in paragraphs when they should have line breaks is also an issue. I have by far hacked more wordpress code then any theme code. It makes upgrading from one version to the next a real hassle.
Comment by Blog marketing — July 28, 2009 @ 8:51 am
I do tweak some of the themes myself. I have learned to build my own and after doing it a few times I don’t think it is really hard to do. I tend to use all in one seo plugin s google sitemap plugin and a related links plugin and do pretty well just keeping it simple.

I like to start building a WP theme from scratch. Then validate it to make sure it’s not broken. After that you take the best of the best from various themes to tweak it to your own. Some of the packaged themes have code bloat. If you build it yourself, you know what you have.

Wordpress has been evolving for years and there are literally thousands of themes, plugins and widgets available. Coding is almost always necessary to adapt a common look to a customised look.
I have, like most bloggers today learned enough by trial and error to change the basic look of any theme and even to code my own from scratch. But to save time I prefer to pay to have a custom made theme.
Whichever way you slice it wordpress is an adaptable animal which I have come to appreciate more and more.
Thanks for taking the time to share this.

Thanks for the tweaks.
I use Wordpress a lot and have a few plugins that are very useful for SEO:
1) Headspace: a lot of options to customize/tweak titles and descriptions
2) XML sitemaps: you will never have to manually create/submit a sitemap anymore
3) Robots meta: options to noindex, nofollow certain categories or pages.
4) YARPP: automatically creates internal links to relevant posts, VERY good for creating a natural and good internal linkstructure.
You can find all of the plugins on wordpress.org.

I think you can go crazy trying to optimise a WordPress blog, far too much time can be wasted on this. As long as:
a) you’re set post titles as URLs
b) your template uses the H1 feature
c) you have the SEO All-in-One pack installed
That’s pretty much all the OnPage SEO you need. The rest is down to content, pure and simple. A blog such as this, offers great reading which is the key to getting natural backlinks. And afterall, it’s backlinks that get you the rank, not OnPage SEO.

It’s true that tweaking theme is fun and enjoy (if you know how to code it right lol), but if you’re doing it just for SEO, why don’t you just download the available plugin to make your blog more SE friendly?. The most famous and good plugin as far as im concern is All In One Seo.
Btw, could you shoot me one Topica Wordpress theme?.
Thanks.

I definately agree that the latest posts command is very beneficial for internal linking purposes. I use a plugin called YARPP (yet another related posts plugin). I didn’t realize how much my website would benefit from it until I actually saw it in action. I was having trouble improving my SERP with offsite SEO (backlinking) As soon as I added YARPP, 3 of my SERP’s moved up substantially.
Also, I like the theme, can I have it? If so send it to my email.

I have always purchased Themes from many reputable Internet marketers, but had to tweak it anyway to find what works for my purpose. Actually today I have finish customization of some theme I got a week ago and by far it is outperforming any WP theme I had before…I even found plugins I only need and now do not clutter my space on my webhost.

Does it do any harm to use a lot of plug ins with Word Press? I keep finding these fantastic things to add like the one you are recommending, and I’m wondering if they slow down loading time or conflict with each other or anything like that.

Tweaking your wordpress theme just makes it more personal to your site, its surprising a few adjustments can make the theme look unique to your own site, especially if you have some of your own imagery.
