Secret to Success – Ignoring the Noise!

Some things never change. For example I have found the secret to success is focusing on the really important stuff and not letting the noise get the best of you. Don’t let the distractions slow you down. Keep your eye on the prize and do what is needed to win!

There will always be noise out there waiting to get your attention – but you have a choice – focus your energy on something that would be more productive.

I have learned to do that for the most part – however it is always a challenge.

Also – there are things in life that present new challenges – so it never really gets too easy.

Funny but I just flashed back and can almost imagine the feeling of both joy and frustration I had in the early days back in 96 or 97 so when I was discovering how easy it was to make money doing the internet thing.

These days it’s mostly joy and a lot less frustration – but it’s still out there!

It’s funny – I just had a flash back to when I first started doing this internet thing and I was so into it and it was overwhelming how much money was coming in. Practically all I wanted to do was work to get more number one top rankings! It was an addiction. An obsession. Back then it was truly like shooting fish in a barrel! I was one of the few people doing it and there was a mad rush to grab all that I could!

Once I got a taste of the feeling of success and I figured out how to get more of it – that’s all I wanted to do!

When I first discovered the only limit to how much I could make was how much I threw out there I was on a mad mission to get as many web sites up as I could. I could barely sleep. All I wanted to do was hammer away and get more #1 top rankings. I was addicted to the success.

I discovered many tricks and shortcuts. It was the wild west and I continually found ways to get work done faster and more efficiently. I was getting really good at deciding what was most important to do – and what was wasting my time and not bringing me a return.

I don’t know why, but I can vividly remember when I was in line at a grocery store and I was feeling very impatient. I was so frustrated that I had to wait. All the lines in the store were so long and everything seemed to be in slow motion and it felt like it was such a huge waste of time.

I remember feeling trapped and helpless because at that point in time I had just figured out the fast way to success and I was starting to get so accustomed to finding new shortcuts and getting results faster and discovering new ways to get on top of the search engines.

I was in a mad rush to make all the money I could and I became really good at multitasking and so forth.

And here I was in line at the supermarket and I was stuck. I felt this slow motion grocery store thing didn’t offer any possibilities to help get me out the door faster.

I couldn’t find a solution to make it faster – but I did find a way to make use of that wasted time – next time I brought something with me to read while I was waiting in line. Probably the Planet Ocean SEO newsletter or something like that. There was so much new exciting info. It was a matter of finding out the hot trick that worked right now.

There was an especially mad rush because you never knew how long that TRICK would work before someone plugged the hole and the trick or secret tactic stopped working. It was a crazy time

It was crazy – I used to print out stuff and read it while waiting in line at the store or while eating lunch out etc. so I could at least keep up on all the trick seo things that would get me on top faster!

I settled down and relaxed more eventually but I still fondly remember those early days when it felt like every minute not hammering away was losing money.

I’m much more relaxed now and haven’t been doing that for along time. In fact I pretty much stopped reading stuff at meals a long time ago and try to enjoy life more.

I’m a bit more patient but very often I still wish that LIFE could have a fast forward button like my Tivo does. I’d skip the noise and fast forward to the good stuff!

  4. Hi Mike

Isn’t it always the way. The more “noise” we make we naturally assume we are getting nearer our goals. Quite the opposite is true as “traction” is far more use than noise.

Because we appear to be doing a lot, it doesn’t necessarily mean we are of course.

By focussing on one thing at a time and doing this until completion, I find this works for me.

    Great article Mike..

  6. Hey Mike. I started my website in 2002 and back then things were a whole lot simpler. Back then search engines actually paid attention to meta tags and keywords…my how things have changed. Trying to avoid all the noise out there now and focus on the task at hand is becoming more difficult every day…but I’m determined to win. I found your post to be a very enjoyable read. All the best!

  7. Hi Mike, I’m sure there are still plenty of people now (myself included) who find themselves in the position you used to be in. It takes discipline to remain focussed and calm. Its so easy to get caught up in the constant distractions and opportunities. However, taking time out relax can often be a serious difficulty faced by many newbies gathering momentum.

  8. I find so much attention grabbing jargon out there, so i know how hard it really is to sit still and focus, but i like to use this one simple tactic…FOCUS=Follow One Course Until Successful :-) I have this on my office wall, and it still makes me finish my daily tasks before i get sucked in to facebook and twitter :-)

  9. This is a very inspiring post. We sometimes get discouraged with all the “noises” that we hear without thinking that the more “noise” we hear, the closer we are with our goals. It should be more of a motivation than a discouragement.

  10. Great post Mike! I really enjoyed reading your blog.. It is very important that you “enjoy what you do” for the success of your online marketing and be focused on what you do.

  12. I absolutely understand what you were going through in those early days of Internet marketing. I had a very similar experience until I realized how to delegate certain tasks. Now I have people working for me and I found a great way to monitor employee performance with a program that does it for me, so I can concentrate more on what is important both in business and my personal life right now. Keep up the good work, and take care of yourself, too!

  13. Focus is the key. Keeping your eye on the prize is the way to succeed. People who have the ability to focus are the ones who usually succeed. Outside noise will not help anyone achieve their goals.

  15. Just the title of this article resonated well with me. The “noise” and “information overload” can sometimes be overwhelming. The best thing to do is just choose a tactic and try it. Just one. That way you get stuff done while saving your brain.

  20. Hi Make, thanks for the article and I can relate to how you feel. Although I would never wish that life had a fast forward button as I am a firm believer that time is more valuable than anything than any amount of money as well. Keep up the posts.

  21. Noise is like keeping your wife always with you. It keep on asking questions, doubts, etc. It just stops our mind to think ahead. Ignore noise, keep focused on your ideas and move ahead. Success will be your’s.
