Internet Marketing and Better Backlinks - Different? Better? Find out why.

News and information for online web publishing professionals!

Blogs are for Making Money, right???

How many blogs do you have???

Are some of them for business purposes?? What about the “personal blogs”… do you have one of those?

 At least one I hope! Ideally several… I have several… that’s good – right?

Blogs are for making money – at least – BUSINESS blogs are for making money.

Personal blogs are for sharing stuff and having fun.

Two different things entirely.

I found out pretty soon after starting this blog – Mike Liebner’s Internet Marketing Blog – my first personal/business blog – that having one “personal blog” simply is not enough!

I initially intended for this blog to be for reinforcing my business identity and credibility as being an expert in internet marketing related topics.

I wanted to discuss topics about doing business online and publish internet marketing articles – BUT – I am also into a lot of other things too.

Like most people – I have a lot of interests. Music, photography, computers, technology etc.

But the topics could NOT coexist together in the same place… at least not while having the max impact I desired. My business oriented intentions needed to have the focus.

Do you want to have a “professional identity”? If yes – a business blog is what you need.

Blogs can have many intended purposes – you can post for fun, pleasure, goofing around or BUSINESS. Not funny bidness but MAKE MONEY BUSINESS.

BUSINESS should NOT be mixed with pleasure – at least NOT in this case.

Why??? Confusion.

Confuison is not good. It’s confusing. In a lot of ways.

As I would watch the ads that Google Adsense was showing on these pages I quickly realized I could not cover everything in this blog. The non-marketing topics were throwing off the ads showing for internet marketing related stuff.

Google seemed confused and did not know which ads o show because originally this blog was about many things, not just marketing (unfortunatley they still are confused – look at the ads showing – they show some really stupid stuff some times that no one would ever click on…).

Blogs for making money or for business purposes should ideally focus on a single topic or a reasonably tight theme. The same with Twitter and Facebook.

If you really want to gain a regular audience that comes back and trusts you as an expert or authority – you need to make sure they KNOW excatly what they’ll find.

Don’t confuse them. Give people what they came for.

To me – there is nothing worse than following someone because they are experts in marketing or advertising and then seeing them write silly or stupid stuff about their kids not eating brocolli or sharing cookie recipes or other non-biz personal stuff that takes away from the professional identity/credibility followed in the first place.

Hey – don’t get me wrong – I can appreciate someone just got an iphone or ipad or itoy and are having fun playing games on it – I just don’t want to read it about games or food or family or sports trivia when I expected to see what new business strategies have been written about.

Blogs and web sites and especially “professionally oriented” identity tools like Twitter and Facebook need to be organized into tight and relaible theme centers (“theme centers” hmmm… I made that up… sounds good though…)

Keep it simple – keep it tight – keep it predictable.

Showcase something and stick to it!

The main reason is that if you cover TOO many unrelated topics in one blog you will lose a huge advantage you might otherwise gain by tightening the focus.

Me, I learned the hard way. But I did learn…

For that reason I bought the domain and started my >>> Positive Think Tank blog.

That way if I wanted to write about something non-internet marketing – I had a place. I also have a blog for my music at >>> Mike Liebner Music. I have other blogs too.

I do hope my visitors will also discover those and be interested in other parts of my life – but I try to keep that stuff seperate. It keeps this blog focused and on topic.

That’s good, right???

  1. Before making a blog one of the questions needed to be ask is what topic you would want to punt on that blog. It really needed to choose what you really like, because what ever topic you have chosen that will be your topic through out the blog.

  3. Hey Mike

Great points as usual! Today it’s alot easier just to set up a new blog and being focused…a theme center as you called it (it definitely has a nice ring to it btw) than it was in the early days of the internet when domain costs were much higher.

I had a blog that started off focused but then deviated because as you said, personal interest stuff threw the spiders off and soon the search engines didn’t have a good idea of what my blog was about anymore, dropping from a PR 5 to a PR 2! That was my first experience that taught me the important lesson of focus 😉

Do as you recommend and create a new blog around your interests. Heck, I’ll be checking out your other blogs as well. It’s always interesting for me to watch what you do as it triggers more ideas!

ps..now are your misspellings in your post intentional to capture that traffic? I’m always nervous to not correct those in my stuff but it makes total sense to rank for those…need to incorporate this more..

  4. Being focused and giving folks what they came for will pay huge dividends online. We all have to struggle with information overload. If I get to a site, I want to get what I have been looking for, plain and simple. I assume that the same is true of all my visitors. In the end this is a simple ‘recipe’ to follow.

  5. Having just set up a blog, these are useful points to bear in mind. I want to include some personal experiences that are relevant to my niche, but this a good reminder never to stray off topic otherwise the readership that I hope to develop will soon disappear again.

  8. There are a lot of great tips listed above. I am relatively new to the internet blogging game. I have worked for the past few months as the editorial intern at a New York City based online real estate site called http://www.nycrentals.com. 9. Hi Mike
I’d like to say that this was inspiring – unfortunately it’s not.It should be obvious to one and all that your blogs should remain on topic at all times.
So business and personal/hobby blogs should be kept apart.
I have a site for German Shepherd Dogs – can you imagine what would happen if I started on about Internet Marketing?
I think readers would be shocked and think I’ve gone mad!
I don’t think the search engines would be very thrilled either.
But you know this anyway don’t you(LOL)

  14. blogs are great – but they are greater and more effective if in a niche. It’s vital that all Bloggers carefully think through their niche to maximise their opportunity

  15. Nowadays, blogs have become more popular than ever. I think one of the many reasons why so many blogs are about making money online is that blog readers are tech savvy. They know about twitter, they know about RSS feeds, and they know about podcasts. Therefore, giving you more options to communicate posts to your readers. Plus, they are easy to create, universally well accepted and very easy to customize. They also provide you with an immediate platform to discuss whatever you want and you can quickly set up a blog about whatever you fancy.

  16. Whether you’re an individual or business, you can actually earn money from your own blog. As long as you follow the right strategy in doing it. Also, you need to consider the constant post.

  17. I totally agree with chicago party limo. A blog needs to have a theme. I have read lots of blogs which have different theme and it thus makes me at lost in searching for topics I want to read. Maybe, their categorizing skills isn’t as organized as others but I believe, it will help in driving more traffic to your website.

  23. I do think that having many blogs makes it easy to make all kinds of links to and from other blogs or easily do cross sellings that way.

It also has the advantage that a word that’s hyperlinked in a post does automatically attract a little more attention also.

Your article truly did switch the light on for me as far as this subject goes. Nevertheless there is actually just one position I am not really too comfortable with and whilst I attempt to reconcile that with the actual core idea of your issue, let me observe just what the rest of your subscribers have to point out.Well done.
