Blogging Underground and Facebook

Facebook is great but I must say I regularly have moments where I go – “huh – what is up with that?”

OK, so I admit it. I got caught in this confusing merry go round of a mess trying to get what I would call a “vanity URL” for my Blogging Underground fan page at Facebook. You know a short easy to remember URL (web address).

I already had one for my “personal page” at Facebook and that all made perfect sense:

http://www.facebook.com/mikeliebner

But what about the business page aka fan page I created for Blogging Underground? It was a long-ass URL that no one would remember.

I wanted to brand my Facebook Blogging Underground “fan page”.

I wanted that URL to be short and sweet too…

Well, I finally figured it out and I now have the URL on Facebook that I have wanted.

http://www.facebook.com/bloggingunderground

Now, I like to think I am pretty sharp – but hey – I’m a busy guy – so I feel like Facebook really gave me a runaround on this whole facebook web address thing and it took me longer than it should have.

It really should have been easier to figure out. Is it just me or do they do things strange sometimes???

All I wanted after all was a nice short VANITY URL for my Blogging Underground fan page.

Why didn’t they let me get it right way?

They made me earn it before they let me have the name I wanted.

I created my “official fan page” for Blogging Underground at Facebook a few months ago and at the time they gave me some long obnoxious URL.

Then after research I found they would let me get what they call a “username for a page” after I had 25 people like the page. Geez. OK.

They made me jump through hoops to get a username.

USER NAME???

They call a web address a username? How smart is that?

Not what I would look up on Google to find out info on it.

I kind of forgot about it, but hey – I really wanted to brand my page so I could promote it properly with a permanent URL and I finally figured out how to get my page the proper URL and I will explain so you can do it too.

Here is what Facebook refers to this as – it is very confusing they way they describe it.

“How can I secure usernames for my Pages? If you are an administrator of a Facebook Page, you will be able to choose your username at http://www.facebook.com/username  just like a user selecting a username for their profile. There will be an interface for you to choose usernames for each of the eligible Pages you administer.”

I better stop ranting – but let’s just say finding out how to do this was run-around.

Here is the URL if you have a fan page and you’d like to set your own URL for it:

http://www.facebook.com/username

You’ll need to check availability and then meet their terms.

So I guess – alls well that eneds well – I now have a nice URL I can give you!

So – please do me a favor – stop by my Facebook page for Blogging Underground and “like it” if you could! I’d really appreciate it!

  15. You think you had a hard time getting a vanity Facebook URL. We both did. I think after several days of wondering I finally popped in the key phrase into a search engine to ask when do I become one of the fortunate ones. 25 fans, likes, or recommends is all it takes. For some blogs and businesses that can take an eternity.
